Be prepared for 30 minutes of hip hop. Maybe a bit of dancehall and funk, too.

sweet. "Grown on me" could have been taken the wrong way. 30 degrees BBQ and had it pumpin out and the vibe lifted as it swung along on it's way, did the trick, much love.

Man, my tape copy of "40 Oz To Freedom" just took a shit on me, so no love in the car. Plus, my original CD was loaned to someone out here in Oz, but I forgot who. So my only copy of it at the moment is a tape that Direkt made off my CD right after I moved here with Pre-Shrunk on the other side. My CD was the original, too, before they signed to MCA. So it has all the songs they couldn't get the clearance for. If I loaned it to anyone here, please inform me. I love and miss that CD so much.

Beause I told some peeps on this site that I'd be doing this and because said peeps haved pm'ed to remind me, but mainly because this forum means so much to me, I thought I’d include a little something about each of the songs in my mix, just so you know why I included them. If you’re not into sentimental blubbering from a fat American, please disregard this ramble below:

Melbourne Beats December 2005 Mix by Obliveus -- Recorded on Sunday December 4th -- AKA “Dboy needs to start playing all his dope records in the clubs instead of living in the MB forum” Mix.

Recorded on 2 Technique 1200 turntables and an old Numark mixer that I acquired second hand from Scotrod for $30. Unfortuantely, my needles are over a year old, so sound quality isn’t flash hot—apologies for that. No edits were performed on this mix. What you hear is as it sounded as it came out of my mixer, for better or worse.

I went with a mix that touches upon all the styles of music I tend to play in the clubs. From hip hop to funk to breaks to d’n’b; it’s all in there. I’ve never been one to stick with one style of music for too long in a set, as my hyper tendencies always take over no matter what I do. Basically, these are all songs I’ve been playing since I moved to Melbourne and each has at one point rocked a dance floor in its own way. It was extremely difficult for me to put the last 5 years into a mix, and choosing which songs to include kept me at work in my back room for 3 nights in early December. Some of the songs I’ve been mixing together for years (ala Ill Type Sound & B-Boy Stance) but most are seeing an OB1 recorded mix for the first time. It is though a good representation of what you might hear if you ever happen to pop in at a place I’m playing, depending on the time of the night or the vibe of the room...

Track 1 – Mr. Big Stuff – Heavy D & The Boyz
So many people play out Heavy D, but few know that when he first came out, he was pretty dope. Long before “Now That We Found Love” began annoying the hell out of me with constant MTV play, “Mr. Big Stuff” used to rock junior high parties (Years 7+8 for all you Aussies) back when I was younger. A friend of mine sent this back with my wife after her recent trip to the states, because he knew how much I loved this song back in the day.

Track 2 – Dwyck – Gangstarr
Classic! Guru & Premier. Nice & Smooth. Nuff’ said.

Track 3 – Murder She Wrote – Chaka Demus & Pliers
Dancehall was actually the music that got me into non-band music. Err, that didn’t sound right. Dancehall was the first club music I got into that wasn’t performed live by a band. I used to go to my friends weekly dancehall night in San Jose, CA (my hometown) when I was still singing in my band. This was always my favourite song of the night and I used to bother the hell out of the DJ’s until they played it. My mate, Karen, gave me this track as a “Welcome to DJ’ing” gift the night I got my decks. Has never left my box for almost 5 years.

Track 4 – Phenomenon One – Freestylers
I think everyone that knows me knows that I’m the biggest fan of the Freestylers. It wasn’t until “We Rock Hard” came out that I seriously started contemplating a move from singing in my band to becoming a DJ. It’s still my all-time favourite breaks release. “Phenomenon One” is almost forgotten nowadays because it was on the fairly disappointing follow-up to “We Rock Hard”, “Pressure Point”. But this is, without a doubt, my favourite track off that album and is another one that hasn’t left my box since I bought it. In fact, I’m sure most people are sick of me playing it. Sorry.

Track 5 – Cut Chemist Suite – Ozomatli
Shit, seeing Ozo for the first time on the tour for their first album, with Cut and Mr. Tuna, is still one of the highlights of my life. When that album came out, nobody was doing anything even remotely close to what these cats from LA were on to. I just saw them again a year ago and they still got it. They’re one of the few bands that I’ve seen on 2 different continents and have never failed to impress me with their live show. I chose this one, because it still gets a dance floor going. A no-brainer to always bring.

Track 6 – Down On The Corner – Creedence Clearwater Revival
I almost bought tickets to go see John Foggerty recently, that’s how much of a CCR fan I am. This one’s a selfish choice. My dad used to play CCR non-stop (being a hippy and all) when I was a “little” tyke, so they’ve been close to my heart every since. You may laugh, but I challenge you to watch how a dance floor always starts when it’s played. I dropped it at Revolver last month and Paz came up to tell me how he always plays it, too. I had no idea there were other CCR fans in Oz. Funny side note – everybody always thinks CCR were from the south because all their songs were about the Bayou and the south, etc. But they were actually from Oakland, CA. Represent!!! Spies (Direkt) has actually had a bass player re-do the bassline for this song and has crafted a dope hip hop tune out of it.

Track 7 – Rocksteady – Fdel
Invada is such a cool label. After hearing that first Fdel tune on Triple J for 3 months, I finally scored the vinyl copy on my birthday this year. This is the first track on the album and it’s my favourite. FUNKY!!! You gotta love an Aretha vocal hook.

Track 8 – Aint It Funky – Krafty Kuts (Fort Knox Five Remix)
Yeah, boyee. My favourite song off the Krafty full-length gets the latin/funk remix from my current favourites, Fort Knox Five. The first of two FKF remixes on my mix; they took a slower, mellow funk jam and turned it into dance floor fodder. Plus, Ashley Slater (Freak Power) on vocals. This one’s been played non-stop for the past 2 months since I got it.

Track 9 – Rockit – Herbie Hancock
Who doesn’t remember this video from when we were all kids? Those mannequin legs walking all over the place. This track always pleases and has been known to force Scotrod onto the dancefloor for some Hampton Park Shuffles.

Track 10 – Now I’m Living For Me – Skeewiff (For Knox Five Remix)
FKF Remix #2 sees the boys tackling my other favourite, Skeewiff. What was the dopest tune off the “Booty Shaker” EP from a couple of years back, completely destroys now. Has been a staple in my box since I bought it in Canberra back in July. Percussion, horns: How dope are Fort Knox Five? Wish I would’ve caught them at Croft a few months back.

Track 11 – Wont Talk About It – Beats International
This one’s for the ladies. My wife loves this song, so I had to put it on. Norman Cook was such the man, actually, still is. I’ve loved everything he’s done, especially Freak Power, his funk band with Ashley Slater (of Krafty Kuts fame). Fatboy Slim’s alright, too.

Track 12 – Three Piece Suite – Skeewiff
I told you they were my favourite. They deserved the 2 song inclusion. Can’t say they’ve ever done something I don’t like. Granted, some of their stuff gets weird and isn’t too dancefloor friendly, but I dare you to not shake yer ass to this classic track. ORGAN RULES!!! Funny story, the first time I ever heard someone play this out was at Out of Order and the culprit was none other than Hound. He looked totally freaked when I almost tackled him trying to find out who it was and I bought it less than a week later. BTW Does anyone know what happened to the little guy? He had such good taste in tunes.

Track 13 – Ill Type Sound – Krafty Kuts
I can still remember the day Finger Lickin Funk came out. It was almost like the day my first son came out. I think me, Thayer, Doc Felix and Brand all bought it on the same day, because it used to get caned every Friday night back at the International Lounge Bar (remember that place) by all of us. Still one of my all time favourites.

Track 14 – B-Boy Stance – Freestylers
The second Freestylers track to make it on here, from my favourite album of all time. Goes so well with Ill Type Sound, but I’m putting this mix to rest. Never put it on a mix tape/CD before, but I’ve been playing this mix religiously for 4 years now in the clubs and it’s gotta stop. This mix is always the mix you throw in when you’re ready to take the night from foot tapping funk to dance madness. Has never failed me.

Track 15 – Raise It Up – Kitachi
This is off one of the first albums I bought after moving to Melbourne. Had never heard of these guys before and the cover still gives me the creeps, but if you like your beats funky, dark, twisted and layered with dancehall riddums, then go buy this. Love it!

Track 16 – Funky Kingston – Toots & The Maytals (Remix Unknown)
Found this at the old Central Station back a few years now. Can I just say, I love these guys. Saw the Maytals (minus Toots) at Reggae On The River in Northern California back in 98 and at the time it was the best set I’d ever seen by any band. Fucked the mix on this one and cut the bass from the Kitachi song too early (OOOPS!!!)

Track 17 – Forget It – Cut & Paste
Cut & Paste!!! Andy Gardner and Matt Cantor before they both became bigwigs with the Plumps and Freestylers. Have everything they’ve done on Freskanova, but I’m always searching the bins for random releases like this. Acid breaks to the 80th degree from way back in 96’. Scored it at Alley Tunes for six bucks. How good is the most sampled song in the history of breaks making it’s way into the middle of this track?

Track 18 – Unknown – Bassbin Twins
Fucking Bassbin Twins! They never put the names of their tracks on their albums, but atleast they always have dope artwork on the label. I have no idea what this one’s called, but they steal the same sample BDP used. Or was it Rob Base? The horns always make me shake my pubes behind the decks when I play it. The breakdown. Oh, the breakdown with the same sample the Jungle Brothers used on “I’ll House You”.

Track 19 – Groovy Train – The Farm
I love early 90’s British pop music. I had everything Jesus Jones, EMF, Inspiral Carpets and The Farm put out. Something about skinny, little white guys with funny haircuts trying to look cool even though they weren’t. Plus, they were the first dudes to start using all the samples and weird effects. Anyways, I loved it a lot more than all the hair metal bands in the states. It’s all in a closet back in the states and one day, I will have it all out here.

Track 20 – Sandwhiches – Detroit Grand Pubas (Krafty Kuts Remix)
This was probably the first dance record I bought when I started DJ’ing. Originally, I bought it because my DJ friend in CA played the A side at his weekly party. Loved the weird voice singing the song. It wasn’t until I moved to Oz and got more and more into breaks that I happened upon the B side. Lo and behold, Krafty had an electro thumper perfectly crafted for dancing. I still haven’t played the A side in a club yet, probably never will.

Track 21 – Freak & Hustle – Freakazoids
I originally bought this for the Rennie Pilgrem split side, with Paranoia, but tell me this isn’t the funkiest piece of electronic goodness. Don’t know if everyone knows this or not, but Freakazoids are Lee Coombs and the Drumattic Twins, before they were the Drumattic Twins. This track was produced around the time of Lee Coombs’ first production for FLR.

Track 22 – The Real Funk – Infekto (Boogie Army Remix)
Have no idea who these guys are as I’d never heard of them before I picked this up at Mighty Music Machine. Such a tune. A bit on the 80’s electro side and should be on the Breakin soundtrack. Has never left my box since I bought it. First time I heard it, I thought to myself, “This sounds like something Hans would play”.

Track 23 – Purple Pussy – Unknown
I always thought this was a Krafty Kuts booty, but someone told me recently that it isn’t. Regardless, it’s no surprise to anyone that’s heard me play before that I continue to cane this track to this day. I like the vocal side, but the clear winner is the side with nothing but “Pussy” all over it. Always gets the dance floor hopping. I remember this track coming in to Boston Sound a couple of years back and Drew called me to tell me it was in. But he said I couldn’t buy it until Saturday, because we were doing a Beats Working Vs Sumo at Scubar on the Friday night. I had to watch him and Guyno cane both sides that night and I was at Boston Sound the next morning to buy my copy.

Track 24 – Warning – Freestylers (Soul Hooligan Mix)
B Side of the “Warning” 12” that came out with “We Rock Hard”. Such a better version than the original. Brings me back to the days when I spent all my money going to ska/reggae shows.

Track 25 – Fiests Latina – Greg Packer
This man is my favourite d’n’b DJ/Producer, in terms of volume of classic tracks and skills on the decks. Love all his work that he’s produced and he’s got to be one of the nicest guys in the country. I remember meeting him when he played Lounge back in the day on a Thursday night. He hung out and was talking with all of us for about an hour, but I was the only one to walk away with his new white label. This was when Spiessdogg, myself, Jase, Tim, Ash, Jimi and Dan had just started Prime Mover and it was on Fridays back then. I played my new GP the next night. I remember Tim being jealous. HA!

Track 26 – Music Is Everything – High Contrast
I know d’n’b heads are probably sick as fuck of this song, but damn if it isn’t my all time favourite d’n’b track. I used to cane this every week back in the chill’n’bass room at Fractured (Glenn would always be the first one on the dancefloor whenever he heard the first singing part, but Al was too busy macking on chicks to dance). I knew then that it wasn’t really chilled drum’n’bass, but how good is it? Still!!! I chose this as my last track because it says everything about me. Music Is My Life! Always has been, always will be. I can only hope that my boys follow the same path I have with music, but in their own way, just like I did following on from where my dad left off.

I told you it was going to be sentimental.

Now for those of you who read all of this, good on ya. Sorry it was so long, but this mix really meant something to me and I tried to incorporate everything I’ve done for the past 5 years into it. Now I know my mixing aint spot on, but I didn’t feel like spending 3 weeks getting a perfect mix ready. This is about as off the cuff as you’ll get with me. Hope you enjoy it and if yer ever in need of a CD version, just PM or email me and it’ll be sorted.

"Track 23 – Purple Pussy – Unknown

Good tune - Elroy from Sydney did this. Purple Pussy is actually the other side tho ;) ... the Khia/Prince thing.

I love and miss that CD so much.
i can make a copy for you.
